Internal Medicine Physicians Say Supreme Court Decision Puts Access for Medicaid Patients at Risk

WASHINGTON June 26, 2025—The American College of Physicians (ACP) is deeply concerned that the Supreme Court decision announced this morning threatens access to care for Medicaid beneficiaries. The decision in Medina vs. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic paves the way for states to limit from whom enrollees in their state Medicaid program can obtain care, without any recourse for those enrollees. Medicaid beneficiaries already experience significant barriers to accessing the health care services they need. Adding additional hurdles on top of the financial barriers or barriers due to health conditions that these patients face will keep many of them from necessary medical care. We should be seeking ways to increase access to care for our patients. By allowing for additional, unnecessary restrictions, today’s decision moves us further away from the goal of better health and health care for all.
