ACP Well-being Champions: Promoting Well-being Through Awareness, Advocacy, and Action

“Loneliness does not come from having no people about one, but from being unable to communicate the things that seem important to oneself, or from holding certain views which others find inadmissible.”
—Carl G. Jung, MD, Memories, Dreams, Reflections
How can we bring awareness to what we don't know? Perhaps by asking questions or having difficult conversations. Yet at times it can be hard to be honest with ourselves or with others. National Physician Suicide Awareness Day (#NPSADay) was created to help break down the culture of silence around physician mental health and suicide. As an official NPSA Day–supporting organization, ACP encourages physicians, colleagues, friends, and family to foster a culture that addresses burnout, supports fulfillment, and normalizes mental health treatment for physicians. ACP offers resources to address the root causes of physician well-being, including the Physician Well-being and Professional Fulfillment Initiative, the Advocacy Toolkit: Modernizing License and Credentialing Applications to Not Stigmatize Mental Health, and the I.M. Emotional Support Hub.
Based on feedback from members, ACP has added a new page on physician suicide awareness and prevention resources. ACP recognizes physician suicide as a complex problem requiring system change and has compiled a list of resources on various types of programs and research in this area.
Speaking of difficult conversations, ACP continues to support its members by intensifying efforts to protect patients through vaccination advocacy. This summer, ACP joined with other medical professional societies to sue HHS & Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. for unlawful, unilateral vaccine changes; sent a letter to leaders of congressional committees urging them to support vaccine science; and issued a joint statement expressing alarm by the decision to halt most federal investment https://www.acponline.org/node/66615033in mRNA vaccine research. ACP will continue to advocate for its members while it works to preserve science, evidence, and scholarly discussion.
